Undergoing surgery Mohammd Shami |
Mohammed Shami is on the path to recovery after undergoing surgery on his right Achilles tendon in London recently. Unfortunately, this means he's likely to miss out on IPL 2024, scheduled from March 22 to May 26. Shami's absence from cricket dates back to India's ODI World Cup campaign, where despite playing a pivotal role and emerging as the tournament's leading wicket-taker with 24 wickets in seven matches, he battled through pain, resorting to injections to manage his ankle discomfort. Now, with his focus on rehabilitation, Shami aims to return to full fitness and resume his cricketing journey soon.
Mohammed Shami's recent injury setback deals a significant blow to the Gujarat Titans, led by Shubman Gill, ahead of IPL 2024. Shami, who was instrumental in the team's runner-up finish in IPL 2023, will be sorely missed as their highest wicket-taker.
Despite Shami's initial optimism about recovering from ankle stiffness in time for England Tests, his hopes were dashed after further assessment at the BCCI's National Cricket Academy in January. This setback also saw him miss out on India's Test squad for South Africa, with his persistent ankle issues sidelining him from the white-ball leg of the tour.
India's Test team, in Shami's absence, has introduced fresh talent like Mukesh Kumar and Akash Deep, who earned their Test caps during different stages of the ongoing World Test Championship cycle. Shami's absence has been notable, especially considering his last Test appearance was in the WTC final against Australia at The Oval in June.
Furthermore, Shami's injury casts doubt on his availability for the upcoming T20 World Cup, scheduled to commence shortly after the conclusion of IPL 2024. This is a significant setback for India, as Shami's experience and skill would have been invaluable in the tournament held in the Caribbean and USA.
As Shami focuses on his recovery journey, the cricketing fraternity eagerly awaits his return to the field, hoping for a swift and successful rehabilitation process for the talented fast bowler.
